I swear the book wasn’t edited. The writing was incredibly difficult to navigate because the sentences were doubled in parts, scenes rewritten without the original scene being deleted so you’re reading the same scene twice just different wording, the timeline is all over the place, one minute she’s being rushed to the healing hut the next she’s in the middle of the fray being attacked and rushed to the healing hut again but we have no idea whether that’s the same scene or a different one because we have no information between one scene ending and the other beginning. The smut is glossed over, barely any details at all and when it happens it’s so rushed you can barely make head nor tails of what’s happening. The connection they have is extremely surface level, we know nothing about either of their back stories and the only time we see the two interact is to fuck but yet they’re fawning all over each other with huge declarations about how much they love each other. The whole “you’ve disgraced the clan” bit with the elders was a “wtf?” Moment cos seriously, you mean to tell me the elders were unaware of a chieftain’s orders? Nah. The whole thing is a mess honestly. I tried to push through, I really really did. But this book is a mess. It’s not been proofread or edited properly, it’s got no solid structure, and the romance is just not there. Also, I’m sorry but since when are gargoyles not made from stone? Since when do they have leathery, scaly skin that they shed? Even the description of the gargoyle love interest is confusing as hell and doesn’t match what an actual gargoyle is!
So so cute, I love the flashbacks through the webcomic and how messy and human all of the characters were. The relationship dynamics were so fun to read about. The realness of being surrounded by a loving family for the first time hit close to home, especially because even the “perfect” family was a cluster fuck of secrets and half truths and chaos. But still they loved each other despite all of that. Ellie and Jack are perfect for each other and I really really enjoyed the “honesty game” they kept up throughout the book. This is my first time reading a book by Alison Cochrun but I will definitely be reading all of her books from here on out!
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Truly incredible! I’ve had this book on my shelves for years and I’m honestly mad at myself for waiting this long to read it. This was sweet and sexy and the enemies to lovers vibes were fantastic. Mr Frost is the perfect book boyfriend and I truly adore him. I particularly love that this book didn’t have a third act breakup, and that when Gabby had her moment of panic, logic kicked in and she paused and checked herself to ensure she didn’t do something silly like assume the worst of Johnathan again. The autism rep is so perfect, as is always the case with Chloe’s books, particularly because they are #ownvoice stories. Gabby’s sensory issues and struggles with social interactions are extremely relatable and they made me, a person with Autism & ADHD feel seen. Overall this was great. My only complaint is I didn’t want it to end. I really wish it had been longer, but that’s a personal preference and if anything, a reflection of just how much I love Chloe’s books. I never ever want them to end.
Insanely good. This is by far my new favourite cowboy romance series. I am genuinely obsessed with how these books are written. The plot, the tension, the relationship dynamics, the smut and the romance, all of it is incredible. I LOVED the depth each of the characters had. Colt’s background is heartbreaking and the strain between him & his son Kayce is so real and raw. He genuinely tried his best with the hand he was dealt, and fuck it wasn’t easy with Kayce being such a mess. I’m glad Kayce got a bit of redemption at the end. By no means is he a good man, but I do feel like there’s hope for him yet and I’m excited to see if he crops up again in the future.
Layla was so well written. She’s strong, passionate, fiery, flawed and human. I really loved seeing her grow into herself and learn to put herself first and not just be a “good girl”, though we know she loved being that for Colt 😈
Overall, a must read for anyone that loves an age gap, forbidden love, cowboy romance.
