this had the potential to be so much more, not necessarily disappointed in the book but myself for getting my expectations so high (and yes, the 4 stars means I did like it and would recommend it :)

I hated the whole persona of Marcus Goldman and the glorification of Harry's and Nola's so-called love made me sick. Stayed for the mystery but it got worse as the story went on far too long. Especially the final third part of the book made me angry, even — just stick to something and don't rely on tragic plot twists and shock effects to avoid reaching a conclusion. The ending was unbelievable and left me very unsatisfied.

Classic victim of second book syndrome — underwhelming and full of little details that don't really take the story further plot-wise. The introduction and character of Nikolai Lantsov was my favourite thing about this book. I've never really liked Mal and thus I didn't give a shit about his numerous love quarrels with Alina! He hasn't really done anything wrong but for some reason I can't stand him.

Re-read this book despite not liking it very much on the first read — idk what I was on back then because this was actually exciting to read?? This time I WILL complete the rest of the trilogy! This obviously felt a lot more YA than the SOC duology but nonetheless, I enjoyed following Alina's journey this time :o

This story took my heart, played with it, then smashed it into a billion pieces and glued them back together with love and salty, bitter tears. No mourners, no funerals, yet I will forever be mourning the end of all this.

The best ever. Got even better upon a re-read. Brilliant, unprecedented, heart-warming as much as heart-wrenching (the last one mostly because of Kaz and Inej (mostly Kaz...)). I forgot the dialogue was this witty and genuinely made me laugh out loud. Rare to be at such a loss for words for something I love so dearly. 5/5 would change nothing except the fact that this story is only a duology
