3.5

a novel that felt like it was on the precipice of something bigger. interesting characters in a vivid world, with a masterful interpolation of blake that not only deepened the narrative, but actually informed it. this felt like a pessimist's rendition of the ideas in the marriage of heaven and hell — blake wasn't there for the hell of it. he was a key cypher to understanding the world of the novel and the mind of the protagonist.

the narrative itself, however, felt like it was reaching for something greater than where it actually got to. the resolution felt predictable without being deliberate… what i mean is that i saw it coming externally to the text, rather than internally. izma said that mysteries often let you down and usually the premise is stronger than the conclusion, which is exactly the case with this book! straightforward would be the word i use. but perhaps i was in search of another book which leant into the surreal, rather than tiptoeing around it.
