I enjoyed the writing style here but I wish more actually happened….

The last N.K. Jemisin series I read was the Broken Earth trilogy and this is very different - it’s not at the level of her later works but it’s interesting to see where she started. The main character and core romance are very YA/NA/tropey but her world building is very complex already.

I enjoyed some of these essays/articles more than others but I’m very glad this collection exists!

Obsessed with this!! An instant classic weirdo book. Love the humor here and the fact that the main character makes so many terrible decisions.

Really enjoyed this one - it starts with a bit of a slow build but then gets very tense and fast paced, and I appreciated how all the storylines and characters came together. Warning, it is extremely dark!

This is my favorite of the Inheritance trilogy, both because it’s a comparatively “smaller” more focused story compared to #1 and #3 and also because Jemisin gave us a complicated ending.

A cute rom com with a zodiac twist! I would have liked to see the relationship between Gray and Veronica be a little more developed, as well as Veronica as a character, but I get that that’s hard to do when you’ve got 11 other dates and datees to write. I enjoyed Gray as a character and it was refreshing to see a more masc main character in a wlw rom com.

An academic work convincingly tracing the racist origins of fatphobia - well argued and very interesting. I wish there was more of a focus on the last century, though.

The Year of Magical Thinking: The Play by Joan Didion

An interesting counterpart to The Year of Magical Thinking / Blue Nights - it’s been a while since I read either but I believe Didion is more open about Quintana’s condition and the timeline here than anywhere else.
