it’s cute. i didn’t realise it was a prequel to Betting On You as well, so i’ll have to read that too after i’ve finished this series

i thought it was great 🪄
my only complaint is missing commas in a couple of places where it would’ve made the sentence easier to read, and that it wasn’t any longer! i was invested in their story and would love to know what happens next

thoughts while reading

Perhaps it is my father's teachings, but power is something that should be sought by few and attained by even fewer.
After all, if everyone is equally powerful then no one is powerful. What is power if not an edge over your enemy?

p39: that’s when wilder will appear
p41: see, i could’ve wrote this book
p64: totally crushing on bronwyn

My life has never been normal by any stretch of the imagination, but I think that kissing Wilder is perhaps the most surprising thing that I have ever experienced.
And I walked in on my father murdering one of his business associates when I was eight.

No more kissing in private?
Well, that's not so bad. It just means that I have to kiss her in public.

p93: my heart just died,
the fourth guest is gonna be wilder’s dad

p123: he said was, she’s probably dead
p129: ironically,
bronwyn is gonna end up a vampire
at some point anyway

a sweet book to listen to while doing a puzzle 🧩
peter & josh both really make sure kitty feels involved in stuff ❤️
there’s much more backstory than the film, but i love them both. it might be worth noting that this is not my first time reading, and that’s why all of my “thoughts” are about the stuff they say about scotland, and nothing about the actual plot 😂

thoughts while listening

24m: no we don’t have frozen custard in scotland, i want some
3h4m: shinty?? literally never heard of it
3h5m: we have painkillers in scotland dude! you don’t need to send advil 🙄
3h7m: oh for goodness sake, do you think we are a third world country or something?? our tampons will be good enough for margot

I let out the breath I’ve been holding the whole way over.
ahh the classic line that features in every YA book

4h52m: *inhales a deep breath* WE HAVE OREOS IN SCOTLAND!!! WHAT KIND OF SAVAGES DO YOU THINK WE SCOTS ARE???
6h9m: ok pub crawls we do have but i don’t recommend it
6h12m: raisin weekend? i don’t even know if that is real. clearly just a college thing
8h44m: i forgot that this book ended with a cliffhanger, i’ll have to start book two pronto

karen m. mcmanus’ first heist book was really good, but not my favourite. i wasn’t really keen on the lgbtq+ relationship, but other readers would love it.
originally i thought kat & liam would get together by the end of the book, and i wanted them to, but i also respect the decision to keep them as just step-siblings.

thoughts while reading

p89: 🤣😭💀
p94: well since jamie and kat look the same, it’s not the worst thing to be recognised
p123: so the trio on the cover must be kat, liam, and augustus, but who’s the 4th person?
p186: no wonder kat freaked out when liam put The Haunted Sandbox on in las vegas
p275: what does it mean? what does it mean?
p385: hell yes liam! slay

i actually really liked this book. terrible subject obviously but i loved the speculating i got to do

thoughts while reading

p16: get out they are going to rape you
p23: nooo wrong, you don’t hang up the phone til the paramedics actually get there!
p24: i mean he could be another rapist, but probably not
p49: oh shit the drink! that settles it, never letting anyone else get me drinks
p55: oh my god 😡

I didn't want to talk to the police. It was embarrassing, and scary, and made me feel stupid, but I did. But I've been written off as unreliable — for the most bullshit reason ever!
"Nice boys" don't do things like this. Whereas girls like me are drama queens.
I'm so angry I'm actually shaking. How come boys automatically get excused and girls blamed? I want to break something, or scream at somebody.

p58:
marley better not have been the one to spike alana’s drink
. i have no basis for this theory, just a random vibe
p62: liam is way more likely to be involved, based on proximity to the pool. and why does he know where lana lives? she certainly didn’t tell him on-page
p73: oh
marley
abso-fricken-lutely must’ve known something
p81: i bet
liam
is the third guy 😭
p90: what did i say. WHAT did i say
p97: oh random thought, was
liam following alana out to the pond
??
p120: i’m still not 100% convinced of
liam’s
innocence
p146: no alana, it’s by 12:30. meaning a few minutes before is certainly possible
p155: i’ve known that all along 😔
p172: the relief. i really thought it was gonna be liam
p193: oh 🥺
p223: girl, the anemones grow at stillwater you silly
p231: five miles is not walkable
p251: no no no, friends!! i suspected something like this
p289: i feel a lot more relaxed about liam now
p297: i just got a terrible sinking feeling about
seb
, but it can’t be him right?
p307: you’re on to something now
p346: but why? what could these parents possibly do that would mess up their kids so much??
p347: i thought it was faith 🥺
p351: well i knew that

this was quite good for a festive adult fiction, and even better for readers who want to try solve the hidden anagrams.
i’m usually more into YA, probably cause the characters are much closer in age, but i still enjoyed this book. i wasn’t all that invested in the mystery until about halfway through, but i appreciated the conclusion, and look forward to rereading next christmas to look for the foreshadowing and hidden clues i missed

thoughts while reading

p163: how convenient to have a lawyer onboard
p192: the stowaway
is meg’s stalker!

p264: i’m paranoid
the food might be poisoned

p271: waiting desperately for the reveal
p279: well i did strongly suspect them at least once
p282: but who is the
blackmailer
?

wow what an insight into life in those times. it really is crazy how all she wanted was for her legacy to last beyond her death but she never got to see it form.
i find it interesting and unusual that the audiobooks from the library, and my physical copy are worded completely differently! my books wording was much more 1940s teenage girl for my liking
