Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi
4.0
First of all, I have to admit that Gyasi’s debut Homegoing completely blew me away. It was my best read of 2020. I adored it, so I had extremely high expectations for her second book.
From the beginning of Transcendent Kingdom, Gyasi holds the reins tightly in her hands. She knows what she wants to tell… and so does the reader... In my opinion, the plot was too clear from the beginning. For me, there isn’t enough tension in this book. The overall story was too predictable. I would’ve liked more surprises.
But nonetheless, on every page you can see that Gyasi is a brilliant writer. This novel is undeniable exquisitely written, very compassionate and emotionally searing. The result is a moving, intimate, deeply layered portrait.
If you haven’t read any of her work yet, please do! (but maybe start with this one and read your way up to Homegoing)
