The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls by Anissa Gray

4.0

This is definitely not a read-alike for An American Marriage, but I do think they make a good pairing, and if you loved American Marriage like I did you’ll probably like this, too. Anissa Gray’s debut novel is about four siblings: three sisters and one brother, who grew up raised mostly by the oldest sister. Now this sister, Althea, is in jail, along with her husband, and the others are left in her wake to raise her twin daughters, Kim and Baby Vi. This is more about family than anything – how a family fueled disfunction that has impacted generations, how they are each healing. I was moved to tears by one part late in the book, totally unexpectedly. Gray’s writing and characters are seriously impactful, and I look forward to reading anything else she writes in the future.
