MD’s stream-of-consciousness writing reminds me of a journaling exercise, like the one recommended by Julia Cameron where you just keep writing for a predetermined amount of time. When you’re done you discard the writing, because it’s not about the writing, it’s about clearing your head. Here we haven’t discarded the work, we’ve published it.

I was a a big fan of Marguerite Duras in college, and I don’t know if I’ve changed or if this particular piece is atypical. It’s possible that this is the first one I’ve read in English.
