Tracy Deonn somehow wrote a sequel even more incredible than Legendborn, which was a stunning intro to the series.
I really felt for Bree in this book. Again and again, she kept encountering new enemies, betrayals, and obstacles, to the point that her own magic is hurting her. Every time she tries to get ahead or take control of the situation, it backfires or is yanked away from her.
I loved the way Bree's magic and the magic of the world were explored and expanded. I mean, a magical speak-easy is just an awesome concept. And the ancestral magic of Volition was beautiful - the way a place of pain and oppression transformed into power and protection. Just incredibly poetic. And the ancestors retaliating because of the cuffs? Perfection.
Seeing more of Sel was great, especially his changing relationship with Bree. The drama and tension was INCREDIBLE. I'm deeply, deeply concerned for what's going to happen with him in the next book. He's definitely one of my favourites.
The duality of William's powers was great to see explored, I loved seeing Alice finding her footing in the Legendborn world and was devastated by things involving her at the end of the book, meeting lieges was super cool, and I'm curious to see more of Lark. And Valec. And Ava. And EREBUS.
The twists through the last, like, hundred pages were intense. Didn't think Deonn could top the twist with Arthur's lineage at the end of Legendborn, and I was happily proven wrong. Eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
