Enjoyable start to the series, but I did have some problems with it.

Its obvious this one was majorly influenced by Josh Lanyon’s Adrien English series, and I think I probably would have enjoyed this more if I didn’t love the Adrien and Jacob so much. There were several similarities between the two books that stood out but at the same time this one was done well enough for me to keep me entertained. I picked the bad guy as soon they were introduced but didn’t know the why.
I liked Sebastian and found his eye condition interesting as I’ve not read a character with it before. It did make him a bit TSL at times as if you have a condition that you can’t handle bright lights why would you continually put yourself in situations that can incapacitate you by someone just turning on the lights. His relationship with his father is lovely to read.
I also liked Calvin although I don’t feel like I know him very well at all and I think that is because we are in Sebastian’s head the whole time. I did like that he tried to keep Sebastian out of the case but also didn’t quite understand how he took him off the suspect list so quickly at the start. I would have liked to see more about him and his partner who seems like an interesting character.
I did find the progression of their relationship complexing, as we went from them meeting in an official capacity a couple of times, to Sebastian being attracted and thinking about Cal as “Calvin” not detective Winter and then next time he sees him is calling him Calvin and they suddenly had a personal relationship. I’m not sure how they can tell each other they loved each other at the end as they didn’t know each other.
I also find it interesting that in the two books I have read from this author they seem to follow the same pattern. The MC is in a bad for them relationship, meets a better prospect and is attracted to them and then decides they want out of the relationship, before they can make a complete sever, they sleep with the new prospect MC. While this may be in some cases a bit realistic and doesn’t bother me it will bother a number of readers who don’t like cheating in their books.
I will continue with the series and see how it goes going forward
