Second book that’s just as great as the first. Not many authors can maneuver magic into the real-world, especially into historically oppressed communities (“why wouldn’t they have just magically unoppressed themselves?!”) but the magic world-building here keeps all of today’s racial realities intact/forefront and says of course wypipo would extract magic as a resource, too - and that’s what’s at stake in this book: Precariously successful Black identity and community that jealous haters want for their own. It’s hard to remember this book is fantasy at key moments - so much of what the characters experience is hella real and relatable. Bonus points for extended family support, matriarchal superiority, mc queer love and survival, mc neurodivergence, mc relatable moral dilemmas, and 1000 aura points for audiobook narration.
Graphic: Cursing, Death, Drug use, Gore, Gun violence, Hate crime, Homophobia, Mental illness, Misogyny, Panic attacks/disorders, Racism, Torture, Violence, Blood, Grief, Murder, Cultural appropriation, Gaslighting, Injury/Injury detail, and Classism
