In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

4.0

This is a powerful, honest, and innovative novel. I listened to the audiobook, read by the author, and it was an intense and poetic experience. Although I didn't entirely get the structure of it, and the use of 2nd person point of view sometimes grated on me, overall it was a moving experience. I've never read a memoir by a woman in an abusive relationship--whether gay or straight. Her focus on the subjective experience of it, on the dream house of it, and the unique way she tells the story...helped me to empathize, to get past my usual knee-jerk, "Why doesn't she just leave?" response.
