The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
4.0
Hey, this book was great! Really interesting world building, familiarity slowly assembled into greater strangeness. Also liked the characters. It seemed much smarter and more subtle than most genre novels, like it was written by an adult for adults. And some bits of diversity here and there, both racial and queer, which makes for some compelling variety.
I also appreciated some of the sense of dislocation the narration creates. The story's just a bit hard to hold on to, and told with a nifty narrative trick that keeps you off balance. It's possible that wasn't intentional and just bad writing, but I think it's deliberate and effective. It reminds me a bit of Dhalgren. The only drawback is part of the trick is that large sections are written in the second person which is obnoxious but forgiveable.
Can't wait to read the second book and see where she takes the story and characters. Good stuff.
