Animal Languages by Eva Meijer

3.0

While certainly lacking input from Indigenous and voices of colour, Eva Meijer’s Animal Languages confronts sciences and Western society’s bias against animal thoughts, feelings, and lives. Meijer presents a relatively good breadth of evidence showcasing the natural world’s communication, liveliness, and - yes - language in just the span of 288 pages. Unfortunately, the often disconnected nature of the information given, surprising lack of passion and vibrancy within the writing, and genuine grammatical and structural mistakes is a noticeable downfall of Meijer’s work. Meijer seems to focus too much on appealing to a purely logical basis instead of instilling true passion into her work, making Animal Languages fall just short of a truly compelling and absorbing page-turner in scientific non-fiction; and, in many ways, the content and discussion felt almost surface level.
