This magic, horror-shrouded story somehow manages to successfully render the deep, individual drama of its characters while also impressing the looming evils of racism, slavery, and dehumanization. Beautifully written, with an expert eye turned towards power’s ability to crush what makes us human. Themes of isolation / excommunication versus community, violation versus love, and oppression versus freedom bob and weave throughout the novel impeccably. Fantastic.
