Pretty in Punxsutawney by Laurie Boyle Crompton
5.0
Initial Reaction: Awwww so cute I wanna read that again!
I was given a copy of Pretty in Punxsutawney through JustCommonly Tours in exchange for an honest review and original picture.
Honestly you cannot go wrong with this book; for three reasons: it’s fast paced, has a good message and it’s based off of one the best movies from the 80’s.
Yes I may be biased when it comes to a retelling of the amazing movie, Pretty in Pink, but hear me out for a second. Also if you haven’t seen the movie I recommend watching it on Netflix right now! In short, it’s a teenage movie that follows a young girl, Andie, who is creative in her own mind, but is considered an outsider because she is born on the wrong side of the tracks (literally there are train tracks you have to cross over to get to her neighborhood). So when she gets the attention of “Mr. Rich & Popular”, Blane, everyone turns their heads and questions their relationship. Andie and Blane fall for each other despite the status quo all while wearing outrageously amazing clothes, including a pretty pink dress (well this is debatable-whether the main dress of the movie is pretty- all of her other outfits are on point!).
Honestly though I think Duckie, Andie’s best friend-who is friendzoned, steals the show.
In Pretty in Punxsutawney the book follows a similar plot line except there's a twist. That twist comes from another 80s movie, Groundhog Day, I am not familiar with it, but according to google search the gist is,
A cynical TV weatherman finds himself reliving the same day over and over again when he goes on location to the small town of Punxsutawney to film a report about their annual Groundhog Day. His predicament drives him to distraction, until he sees a way of turning the situation to his advantage.
So you may be wondering why should you read this book when you could just watch the two movies it’s based off of right??
Well in my opinion it takes the best of the two movies and makes them better as the young girl of the story, Andie (yes same name from the movie) learns to look past appearances. Being the new girl in town it's easy for her to judge her new peers based off of their clothes and looks, but as Andie experiences the first day of school over and over again she learns the cliche, there’s more than meets the eye.
This is whats missing from the movie Pretty in Pink, as it's all for appearances sake . Blane can’t go out with Andie because she doesn’t have enough money and she dresses differently. Andie is so blinded by her need to be with Mr. Perfect that she doesn't realize that her real match is her best friend. She and her best friend have so much better chemistry while Blane seems to only offer physical attraction and maybe money? I’m not sure. However Pretty in Punxsutawney rectifies this as Andie learns what movie Andie didn't.
Aside from the movie business the author was able to keep at a steady pace despite it never being tomorrow. The new day was never predictable but it was always genuine and fun as Andie stayed open minded and creative. This adorable love story is the perfect cure for a reading slump or a quick read on the train!
5 on the princess scale!
