Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters
5.0
I kind of miss when queer books were considered inherently political, and were therefore unafraid of being political or confronting other 'controversial' ideas (class, sex work, morally grey characters etc) like this one does. This book is clearly a product of its time (the '90s), but I loved how it had things to say and lots of them. Obviously it's nice that we get some mainstream queer romcoms now, but there's something to be said for the solidarity and political activation that come from being othered.
Anyway, I definitely get why this is considered a classic; it's quite unforgettable. The book was incredibly fascinating and evocative, and I had every possible emotion reading it. Definitely not a light read.
