Hunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton
4.0
WARNING: Spoilers ahead!
The only complaint I have, and what took this from a five-star to a four-star, was the over-abundance of synonyms for 'eyes', namely the word 'orbs'. It was used so frequently that it started to skeeze me out and really pulled me out of the book. So many times it was unnecessary. Same with 'caramel pools'. It's just... awkward to read. I wish she had just kept with the word 'eyes' more often. But that's literally it. My only complaint.
Other than that, I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the writing, the pacing of the story, the fact that Addie isn't immediately saved and goes through something so traumatic it sticks with her for a long time, the struggle with her PTSD even once she's back safe with Zade, and the revenge they sought on all involved in her kidnapping. I loved it!
Fantastic work and I can't wait for the next book from H.D. Carlton!

Okay... I gotta say, I struggled to get through the first quarter-ish of this book. Not because it was badly written. Honestly, the opposite: she did too good of a job describing sexual assault and being forced into sex slavery. I thought I had a strong stomach and loved the scenes of Zade as he went on bloody rampages to try and get Adeline back. However, there were a few scenes where I had to set my snacks aside just to be able to stomach the scene. That, to me, is a sign of a fantastic author. The only complaint I have, and what took this from a five-star to a four-star, was the over-abundance of synonyms for 'eyes', namely the word 'orbs'.
