It was strange to read a book about a pandemic at this time. Something that should have been sci-fi suddenly became very real. Although the Fever described in this book was a lot more intense than we now experience worldwide with the COVID-19 virus. But still .. It was an awful lot like it. A great story unfolds, told by Nico Storm, a now middle-aged man who looks back on his young life in which he is on the run with his father from the Fever, and eventually starts a new community. Already in the first chapter it is announced that the fate of his father will end dramatically. The whole book works towards that. You remain curious how the apparent success that Nico and his father achieved could end like this. The plot twist unexpected, something I always really appreciate in a book.
This book is also about the relationship between a son and his father. Difficult and loving at the same time. Beautifully described. Many times touching enough to feel tears burn.
This book will definitely end in my top 10 of 2021.
