Glimmer: A Story of Survival, Hope, and Healing by Kimberly Shannon Murphy
5.0
Author Kimberly Shannon Murphy is a well known and very successful stuntwoman in Hollywood. The stunts that she performs can be painful, but the pain is nothing like what she endured growing up. For most of her childhood she had been traumatized by her grandfather's acts of sexual violence towards her. (this grandfather was a successful architect and highly regarded within the family and the community)
It's not until she's an adult and feels emotionally ready to face the abuse head on, that she truly and fully *feels* the enormity of what was done to her. Did her painful past play a part in her becoming a stuntwoman? Are the stunts that she performs replicating the fear that she felt as an adult and thus felt familiar?
This memoir is NOT a lurid, tell-all book about SA. Rather it is a thoughtful, well written account of a brave young girl who grew up in a dysfunctional family, who managed to dig deep and look at what was causing her pain and to realize that she was not the cause of the pain.
Readers will ask themselves if it is possible to forgive the adults of your childhood who failed to provide a safe, nurturing environment.
Highly recommend.
* I read an advance copy and was not compensated
