The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young
3.0
For most people, I can totally see how this was a 5 star read. First I will say the writing is overall wonderful. I will share why I subtracted stars, so there are likely spoilers ahead in the event anyone actually reads this review.
Before I get to that part, did anyone else "read" this in sepia colors? Like, during "today" time it had a blue hue to me, like the show Ozark does. When she stepped through the red door, it went to actual sepia color for me.
I will also acknowledge that I am likely undiagnosed AUADHD, so I the color thing, plus the way I put things together at a faster rate than most neurotypical individuals probably factored into my opinion. But I figured out who Nathanial was to her before the book revealed it, and that she was his killer WAAAAYYY before the book revealed it. I actually kept reading because it was well written, and I was sortof hoping it wouldn't be her as some sort of twist.
The next reason I subtracted star points is because there were several plot holes that I was hoping she would address regarding the parallel jumping. One major point was Nathanial having a smoke and walking up on her porch - I don't recall mention of him smoking anywhere else. Maybe I skimmed it, but my brain kept going back to that. Also, it seems she ended the "curse' for her and her daughter, but her gran could potentially go back and mess all of it up since she could still cross over, and does towards the end of her life.
The last reason I subtracted stars is because I felt there was so much of the story undeveloped. Yeah sure, it had some closure, but what about Mason? I get it that she will/has just basically forgotten him, but I felt like that was TOO tidy. Like maybe she would kinda remember. Also her reconnection with her hubby felt overly rushed as well.
I'm being nitpicky because this was a really great book and I will recommend it to others.
