Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O'Farrell
4.0
Maggie O'Farrell's familial drama takes place during a famed drought in England, 1976. Family drama is MY FAVORITE. I would love you to just open this book and start reading, but here's the set-up: Gretta is a housewife and mother to three adult children. One morning, her husband Robert leaves to get the paper and doesn't come back. Over the three days the book spans, we dive into the lives of Michael Francis, Monica, and Aoife (Eee-fa, in case you aren't fluent in Irish names, like me!). Michael Francis has a wife and two kids and is underwhelmed with what he's become. Monica's second husband is obsessed with antiques and looks, and she's the stepmother to two girls who hate her. Aoife is a free-spirited waif living in New York and wondering through life with a secret.
OF COURSE the siblings have a history and Monica and Aoife aren't talking and Gretta is a wild woman who talks constantly. And I JUST LOVE IT. I stormed through this book in a little over 24 hours. Great characters and a fun romp through London, New York, and Ireland.
