What It's About: When Iris Winnow's brother, Forest, goes to fight on the front lines she starts writing him letters and posts them through her wardrobe door. Every time, the letter vanishes. Then, one day, she receives a reply. Only it's not from Forest. Meanwhile, Iris starts working at the Oath Gazette, trying to win the position of columnist in a rivalry with the terribly handsome, but rather aloof, Roman Kitt. Finding themselves at the heart of a war between Gods, Iris and Roman find themselves working together. But Roman's hiding a truth that will change everything.
General Thoughts: Um, hello, I loved this book and I have no idea why I resisted reading it for so long. The writing was beautiful, the romance was delightful, and I spent literally the last 2 chapters going no, no, no, no, no, no, no under my breath. I love the idea of the magical typewriters. I love the premise of the war between Gods over love and deceit. I LOVE the slowburn.
What I Enjoyed: Everything. Iris Winnow is a queen and nobody will convince me otherwise. She's feisty and smart and independent and she don't need no man. Except for when that man is a bit of a snarky idiot who is clearly trying his best not to flirt. The letters ohmygod. The ROMANCE hi hello I am here for it. Roman Kitt is literally a hopeless romantic and I don't know what to do with him except try to keep him safe whilst he worships at Iris' feet tbh.
What I Struggled With: The ending. Not okay.
If you're a fan of lyrical prose, romance without the spice, and beautifully thought-through world building and lore then this one's for you. I can't wait to get started on Ruthless Vows.
