Ok wow, Steven King really blew me away with this book. Although the story here is fantastic, the book stands out most because of its character work. King’s choice to begin the book with a lengthy setup of the town and its people (as well as the choice to continue writing chapters from the perspective of the townspeople as a whole) make ‘Salem’s Lot feel real and the result of the book all the more devistating. While the setup is near perfect (in fact, go reread the prologue after you’ve finished the book) and the climax is amazing, I found the final conclusion to be a little underwhelming.
‘Salem’s Lot may end up being the book that convinces me I like reading horror. What a good start to the month of October!
