The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa
DNF @ 27%
This book isn’t bad or offensive in any way. In fact, I do think there’s a good story in here somewhere (perhaps in the last 2 thirds of the book, who knows?). However, I am INSANELY BORED 😭😭😭. I really thought I’d love this book, but I genuinely can’t do this anymore. ☹️ Random thoughts about what I read:
➤ The full spanish sentences with no context clues will probably make this book confusing for people who don’t understand the language (thankfully, I do).
➤ Found a typo.
➤ Everyone Mar knew and loved died before their eyes, but they were taking it pretty well. I’d be sobbing and screaming non-stop for weeks lol. Also, I know I was supposed to feel sad about Mar’s dad, but we didn’t even know him, so I really didn’t care about bringing him back 🤷🏻♀️. I didn’t think Mar should trade their soul for their dad’s, tbh, especially not by making a deal with the devil 🥴. The author didn’t do a good job building up Mar’s dad as a character, so I was honestly okay with letting him go. I didn’t feeling anything about that plot thread.
➤ Mar seemed like a cool MC. Their powers seemed interesting, and I really liked the non-binary rep.
➤ I understand that Bas was supposed to be very extroverted and friendly, but his obsession with Mar felt soooo forced! Like, why was he so attracted to this stranger, constantly trying to spend time with them, etc???? You don’t know them!! It felt so unnatural. I wish his attraction to Mar wasn’t so sudden.
➤ As I already mentioned, this book probably has a cool story, but for some reason I just couldn’t get into it. Nothing against this book. And I’m REALLY excited for this author’s next book, btw!
