If one wanted to pay homage to black literature, film, and music, they could write a book with characters who embody that same reverence and profound love they have for it. In this case, two teens forge a path that not only leads them to each other, but to better versions of themselves with help from black creatives that have inspired generations.

Aspiring author Dani and local beloved DJ Prince have to be the most mature HS seniors I have ever read about. The angst is kept at a minimum in this novel which is perfect for any adult that may be leery about reading YA. Arguably, these two could have been freshman in college considering the decisions and tough conversations they had with each other, family, and friends, but the dialogue/ lingo is spot on for two black teens living in Detroit. The multiple references to authors like Morrison, Hurston, and hooks, the ode to black films like Love Jones, Love & Basketball, and the in-depth account of how black artists shaped the landscape of music are elements that had me soaring as a book lover and RnB artist.

Dani and Prince being well-developed and three dimensional characters in their own right amplifies their chemistry as a pairing. The book’s flaw and a character that could have been better formulated was Destiny—readers should not view her as simply the “fast” antagonist. The commentary on slut shaming is brief, but Dani is (thankfully) adamant about refuting it. Our MC’s admirable traits are undoubtedly in part due to their solid upbringings at homes filled with love, transparency, and support. Black love is exemplified not only between them, but also in the friendships and community. It is refreshing to see the various ways they lean on each other and practice

Love Radio is a story of self discovery, selfless love, and letting go. If Ebony LaDelle every decides to revisit these characters in a book where they are older, I am completely on board. It’s safe to say that the “kids gon’ be all right” since they have authors like this making sure they are authentically seen and heard.
