I ate this book up and thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the dark, early 19th century vibes and the historical aspect of the medical practicing. Hazel is a strong female character who is easy to understand and yet has a distinct personality. She was willing to put herself at great social risk for the chance to be a surgeon. I enjoyed the romance too, especially in how realistic her progression in her feelings and actions was. This book is strongly rooted in historical fiction, but I didn't like the paranormal element thrown in at the end. I would have liked this book even more if it did not have that part. This book is a bit gory and has some tense moments, but I liked the drama! I also found a lot of the subtle mystery plot throughout the book was very predictable and not surprising at all. This book makes me want to learn more about older medical practices (being a nurse myself), which tells me that the historical aspect was well done and eye-opening.
