The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins
3.0
I don’t read a lot of thrillers so I don’t think I can really say if this is a good/bad example of the genre, but I had a good time. I really enjoy retellings as well. I always find it fascinating to see what authors keep/change, but I also haven’t read Jane Eyre in over 20 years. I suspect that die-hard fans of the novel will not like this retelling! Especially when it comes to Jane’s personality (though there’s a bit of an in-story reason for it that I won’t spoil). I, however, really liked this Jane. Imperfect, manipulative, on the run, and way in over her head without knowing. All three characters—Jane, Bertha, Edward—a variation on the same theme: poor/abusive origins and an obsession to become and be part of higher society. It drives them in different ways and I enjoyed seeing that develop. I wish there had been a bit more time spent with Bertha, and a bit more in the short Edward POV, to get deeper into their characters. It’s a fast, easy read, and—I think—a fairly good time. Will check out her other thrillers.
