STUNNING!!!!!!!!

Good gods this book was great. Just the writing style alone was perfection. Most of the book was the characters recovering from the events of the last book, but it’s done in a way that is still productive. We see character development, the exploration of character’s personalities more in depth, and new little clues/bombshells dropped. I have so many questions and I’m looking forward to the next book.

Alizeh is an interesting character. She’s so soft on the inside, her kindness and compassion overwhelming her, yet she sticks to her logic and puts what she knows she must do before any matters of the heart. I also find it interesting that she knows that she is the savior of her people, but in many ways she seems very reluctant to step up and take action. I understand being scared but her people are so heavily oppressed. Maybe it’s a difference in my own morals or just the fact that I’m used to reading about FMCs that take action and ask questions later, but I found her reluctance towards saving her people a flaw. Hopefully she can get more character development in the next book!

Hazan, my love… you have been broken down into nothing and I can not wait to see you rise from the ashes.

Cyrus? My heart beat for this boy!! I do not trust him AT ALL but my intuition is telling me that if we keep peeling back these layers we’re going to get an amazing, very memorable character from him. I’m so excited to see where he goes. And god damn some of the things he said to alizeh at the end? My heart was simultaneously breaking and falling fast in love with him. Yes. Just. Yes to everything about Cyrus. He is set up to be a character that will plunge a knife into all of our collective hearts and we will cry and smile happily while we die.

It’s so rare these days to read a book that really pulls you in like this one does. Every sentence felt so alive and moving. Each time alizeh feels something, you’re feeling all those emotions right along side her. Tahereh Mafi is a very gifted writer. I can’t wait for the next book!!!
