âJessica Beckâ is the pen name of a dude named Tim Myers. This explains why so many of the female characters are weight-obsessed, mean-spirited, man-mad dimwits.
The book has so many small but hugely annoying inconsistencies, including:
- Someone the main character calls knows whoâs calling before the MC IDs herself! What is this witchcraft? A needlessly long explanation of personalized ringtones ensues. In the next chapter, we see the MC check her caller IDâmeaning she should already be well aware of how youâd know whoâs calling before they ID themselves.
- The MC decides sheâll talk to the victimâs neighbors after sheâs had a nightâs sleep. One page later, as sheâs falling asleep, she âsuddenly remembersâ that she forgot to talk to the victimâs neighbors.
- Frankâs son Martin said, âDad, this isnât exactly what we had planned for today.â [Frank] put an arm around his son. âThomas, sometimes the world laughs at our plans.â âNuff said.
If Iâve said it once, Iâve said it a dozen times: I know cozies arenât âgreat literature.â But is it too much to ask that they have protagonists I can give half a crap about and that theyâve gone through a competent copyediting process?
Moderate: Fatphobia, Violence, and Murder
Minor: Infidelity
