Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer

5.0

This is such a beautiful book, a tribute to plants and our land. I listened to the audiobook for this and listening to the author read it just made the reading experience amazing. Her voice has a peacefulness to it that is so calming and fits so well with the topic of this book and all her shared thoughts about nature. Listening to this book, one has a longing to be out in nature, to not just enjoy it but to respect it and take care of it and understand it. This book is a love letter to sweetgrass, to nature, to the wisdom of the land, and a long overdue recognition of the ancestral indigenous cultures and their wisdom. She shows how understanding and respect of nature is not just important but also healing.

Her writing is poetic and lyrical, beautiful, rich, and full of imagery. I tabbed so many passages! While this book focuses heavily on science (and by far one of the most engaging books on science topics I’ve ever read!), it is also about relationships…relationships with others and relationship with nature…gratitude, reciprocity, the importance of tradition, culture, language, family. In our current society, many of us are so disconnected from nature. This book will helps us see that, and helps us long to re-establish that connection.
