The Lie Tree is just wonderful, a completely original story of a girl in 1860s England inspired by Darwin who wants to be a natural scientist. It's part fantasy, part coming of age novel, part murder mystery, with absolutely gorgeous, insightful writing. A thematically dense YA novel of science, religion, hope, despair, gender, and character.
