The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night by Jen Campbell
mysterious
reflective
medium-paced

A list of my favorite short stories from this book:
“Plum Pie. Zombie Green. Yellow Bee. Purple Monster.” - Body horror based around plants and I love that.
“Little Deaths” - Just yes.
“Aunt Libby’s Coffin Hotel” - Amazing campfire ghost story.
“Bright White Hearts” - Jen is really baring her heart in this one. It is my favorite and I’m glad it was out at the end.
Overall I am in love with the way that Jen tells her stories. She weaves them in a way that is believable. Like if these things happened, this is exactly how it would go down (most notably in “Human Satellites”). I also loved the random facts interspersed throughout the stories, it adds some grounding and I love learning new facts about our world, especially when they are surrounded by existential fantasy.
