Ariel by Sylvia Plath

Had to revisit her. I think many of her poems pack so much emotional punch; they can be like freight trains (excuse the cliches, but I don't know how else to describe her poetry). What ultimately brings them down to the point where I can't give it 5 stars is that she was unsurprisingly pretty racist and, yes, anti-Semitic. Otherwise this would be a perfect collection, I think. I can't adequately put into words how very sharp and visceral her language is. She is very reminiscent of Lorca in this respect. Her recurring images are very similar in spirit as well. I appreciate how she subverts certain common poetic symbols into things with an oppressive nature. My heart truly hurts reading some of the poems, too, especially knowing, of course, how she died. Very predictably as a young teenager she was very important to me, and reading her poems now, they hit very differently but also familiarly at the same time. It was like greeting an old friend, particularly reading her poems clearly alluding to her stay at the hospital. In one way it was actually unnerving reading this; perhaps this wasn't the best time to do it. Nevertheless, overall I do think she was a very powerful poet.
