Delightful. AJ Fikry, widower and curmudgeon, runs Island Books, an independent bookstore on Alice Island, near Boston. Each chapter begins with a reference to a short story and a note from Fikry. AS the book goes on it becomes obvious that the notes are for his daughter.
Each chapter follows the lives of Fikry, the baby abandoned in his store that he then adopts, his slow developing relationship with the publisher’s rep that he was mean to on her first visit, but warmed to in subsequent visits especially because she always brought a book for Maya. Fikry’s friend, Chief of Police Lambiase as well as the sister and husband of Fikry’s deceased wife are active characters.
Eventually we learn that Maya’s mother was a smitten fan of Daniel Parish (brother-in-law) - and he is the biological father. Ismay (sister-in-law) knows this - but doesn’t tell AJ. We have death, two romances, a drunk author’s talk about a “memoir” named Late Bloomers - and through it all - we have wisdom and a love of literature.
Everyone who loves books should read this treasure.
