A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir
3.0
This series gets stranger and stranger and maybe that shows that I am not a big fantasy reader or into world-building. In fact, I told my husband that I think I prefer books that are based in reality, with maybe a little magic thrown in. I almost gave up on this book, but then kept coming back to wanting to know what would happen to Elias and Laia and Helene.
There's a lot of blood and fighting and ghosts and weird creatures. Elias finds out what it really means to be the Soul Catcher. Laia comes to terms with maybe being a leader in this rebellion and uncovers a pretty big secret. Helene finds her place as Blood Shrike while trying to hang on to some shred of her humanity.
It's not my favorite series, but again, I think that's a more me thing than any reflection on the author. I'm pretty amazed by Tahir's creativity in building this world, based on Ancient Rome with a lot of fantastical creatures mixed in. I do think I will read the fourth book when it is released, to see how all this crazy ends up. ;)
