Thunder in the West, Volume 32: The Life and Legends of Billy the Kid by Richard W. Etulain

informative medium-paced

3.5

This was an informative and useful study. However, I found the author's constant measuring of Billy (and subsequent artistic depictions of him) through a 'bifurcated' honour system that would be more at home in video games than real life discomfiting. I also ended up listening to the audiobook as it was difficult to acquire a copy of the physical text, and found the author's adoption of specific voices for each historical person clashed with his supposed non-partisan approach. Still, the brief consideration of Billy's life alongside a more up-to-date survey of his afterlives in various media was welcome, particularly for pinpointing the origins of specific legends about the Kid.
