The Wallflower Wager by Tessa Dare
4.0
The Wallflower Wager by Tessa Dare is the third book in the Girl Meets Duke series, and it is exactly what I was hoping for. I love Dare’s books because they have just the right mix of banter, high jinx, and swoony / sexy bits.
Lady Penelope is the main character and she has never met a lost or wounded animal that she wouldn’t take into her home. As a matter of fact, her wayward animals bring her face to face with her new next-door neighbor in an interesting and somewhat compromising way and so begins their story.
Gabriel Duke is Penelope’s new neighbor and he has built himself quite a reputation. Called the Duke of Ruin, Gabriel has clawed his way out of the slums of London to become one of the most feared men of the Ton. His biggest concern right now though is his neighbor, Lady Penelope and her motley crew of animals who will make it impossible for him to sell his house. When Gabriel demands that Penelope get rid of the animals, she puts a challenge out. If he can find them all loving homes, she will part with them.
I loved Penny and her love of her animals isn’t all that stands out about her. She’s smart and loyal but she’s also not afraid of Gabriel no matter his reputation and her willingness to do whatever she has to in order to protect them, even stand up to him, is what I loved most about her.
The build to the romance with Penelope and Gabriel was more than just an immediate attraction…despite Gabriel’s reputation, he definitely has a soft side and Penny has found it. The animals added another layer to this story. Had they not been there, we would have missed out on the funnier aspects of this novel and how Penny and Gabriel’s story played out.
Penny’s group of friends are all great adds to the story too. I loved how protective they all were of her and getting a glimpse into their lives again was great. I especially enjoyed the scenes where Chase, Ash, and Gabriel were together.
I can always count on a Tessa Dare book to keep me turning the pages and this one is no different. If you like your historical romance with great characters, a storyline that will keep you entertained, and steam / swoon, you should definitely pick this one up. I will be over here just waiting for the next book Tessa Dare writes.
Thank you to the publisher and Edelweiss for the early copy in exchange for an honest review.
