House of Pounding Hearts by Olivia Wildenstein
2.0
I'm not sure why people are comparing this book to ACOTAR? Why is that series some gold standard that everything gets compared to? It's not similar to these books.
Despite my enjoyment of the first book, I couldn't finish this. Fallon gets even dumber and more selfish in this book. I just can't with her. She's so needlessly jealous and naive on top of her insufferable personality. Nothing she does will redeem her in my eyes. She's supposed to be in her early 20s but acts like a 12-year-old. I don't understand how a 700-year-old being could be remotely interested in a clueless immature brat such as Fallon, yet, he conveniently is because "mates." Nope. No way. It's kind of gross and shallow now that I think about it. He keeps information from her about her life and family. He lets her think she's right when she's obviously wrong and doesn't correct her. Not to mention, he's invasive. He reads her thoughts even when she doesn't want him to. I had an issue with that in the first book and it continues into the second book. All of that behavior is manipulative and inches towards grooming.
The FMC ruined this book for me and I like Olivia's writing and her other books. I'm sad I couldn't get past this train wreck of a character and the questionable "relationship" between her and Lore.
