Wow. Sadie Jones presents us with the Adamson family, two parents, three children. The youngest, Béa, is our heroine. She refuses to take her father’s money, has married an artist who makes a living as an estate agent. Bea is a licensed psychotherapist. Bea and Daniel decide to take a three month sabbatical - and start their trip by visiting her brother Alex at the hotel that he manages in Bonne, France. The hotel is a sham, a project that Bea’s drug and alcohol addicted brother can manage for their father in London, while not really “hurting anything” along the way. The hotel has no guests, but does have snakes and mice/rats that live in the attic. The property has a tenant farmer - which provides Alex with one of his activities - collecting rent.
When Bea and Dan arrive - Alex is manic - attempting to hide the disarray and present the hotel in its best light. Two days later - their parents arrive (Bea and Alex’s). They are never presented as sympathetic characters. Liv is neurotic and Griff is a self absorbed billionaire. Bea treats her parents coldly - and wants to leave. She and Dan stay.
Two days later, Alex is sent on an “errand” for their father - and does not return that night.
The next day - they learn that Alex is dead - apparently from a car accident. Bea’s relationship with her father and her husband becomes strained. She has memories of Liv’s Jocastan relationship with Alex. She talks to her eldest brother in Tokyo. Her father calls her “Saint Bea”. Even though Griff throws his money around, the death investigation stalls - and then becomes a murder investigation. Liv and Griff return to London. Bea and Dan stay at the hotel - even though Griff begs them to a) buy a new car and b) move to a different hotel.
Investigation continues, slowly. Liv and Griff return to London to plan a memorial party for Alex - since they can not have a funeral until the body is released.
After Dan is questioned as a potential suspect in Alex’s murder, Bea and Dan return to London for the party. Griff offers Dan a job as an PR agent for the firm that will be gentrifying the neighborhood where Dan grew up. Bea and Dan decide to start using some of the money in her trust fund to improve their lives, and, to do good. The London lawyers sharé a copy of the police report with Bea and Griff. Cause of death was blunt force trauma. After the party, Bea and Dan return to France to resume their trip - and Griff asks them to do him a favor. Could they stop by the hotel and find the cash that Alex was holding there for him?
Turns out - Alex had left the hotel that night to “run an errand” for Griff - he frequently asked Alex to travel to Switzerland to pick up cash - which was then stored in the hotel. Griff did not know where Alex stored the funds. Suddenly, Bea understandsthe real reason her father was so insistent on seeing the car after the accident. He was looking for the $100,000 that Alex was picking up the night he left. She is angry with her father - but they return to the hotel. When they find the money - over $800,000 in cash, stored inside a snake trap - Bea is furious. She calls the police and begs them to come pick up the money. The inspector comes to the hotel - but can not take the money without paperwork. The police leave - and Russ arrives.
Russ is scary. Russ acts as if he is following up on a reservation he made. The hayseed American that met Alex and decided to come see his hotel. He is shocked at the news of Alex’s death. He asks for a drink fo whiskey - he asks Bea and Dan to drink with him. Bea calls the police to report Russ and ask for officers to come to the hotel. Russ plays a song of a band he says Alex would have loved - and then Dan tells him - it’s time to go. Russ leaves - but comes back. His car has broken down.
He then produces a tire iron - and gets Bea to get him the money. He knew Alex was dead - he killed him. He has just killed Dan - and now only Bea stands in the way of him and the cash. Bea stalls as long as she can - hoping the police will arrive. She gives Russ the snake trap with the money, and then closes the trap door to the attic in hopes of staying there until the police arrive. But Russ won’t have it. He forces the door open - and throws Bea down the stairs. She breaks an arm and dislocates her shoulder. Russ forces her to leave the hotel with him - not sure why - maybe the whiskey - or drugs. The police arrive - but somehow Russ and Bea get in his car and leave without the police finding them. Unless maybe Russ kills them - I wasn’t sure. Russ takes Bea to a secluded area. She realizes Dan is dead. She tries to run away - Russ kills her. We end without justice for the good guys.
My freshman English teacher Ms. Friman would have loved to assign this book for a reading related to the Seven Deadly Sins. Bea is Pride, Griff is Greed, Liv is Lust, Dan is Sloth, Alex is Gluttony, Russ is Wrath AND Envy. At least that’s how I call it today.
