The Women by Kristin Hannah
5.0
↠ 5 stars ⭐️
I am speechless. Truly, there are no words that I can say that will remotely give this book the praise it deserves. This is a masterpiece, through and through.
This was my first Kristin Hannah book. And just, WOW. Her writing is so immersive, emotional, and raw. And I admire that she has been crafting this story since 1997. The research that went into this was extensive, and you can clearly see the care that she took when writing such a deeply moving and wholly heartbreaking story. And while Frankie is fictional, her story is real for many, and firmly believe KH did their stories justice. At least in my eyes and heart.
This book broke me more times than I can count. We all learned about the Vietnam War at some point, but not this version. This story was so eye-opening, powerful, heart-wrenching, and beautiful. My heart shattered for Frankie time and time again. Her journey was a difficult one, often marked by loss, heartbreak, betrayal, substance abuse, and PTSD. You ache for her. Cry with her. Hope for her.
I truly loved the bond that Frankie, Barb, and Ethel shared. Through all the hardships and devastation, they always faced it together and had each other’s backs. Their friendship was beautiful, in every sense.
As I said, nothing I can say about this book will give it the immense praise it is deserving of. All I can say is that everyone should read this book.
So just go do it.

Quotes
“The women had a story to tell, even if the world wasn't quite yet ready to hear it, and their story began with three simple words. We were there.”
__
“Thank God for girlfriends. In this crazy, chaotic, divided world that was run by men, you could count on the women.”
__
“Words were creators of worlds; you had to be careful with them.”
__
“That was the starting and ending point in life: love. The journey was everything in between.”
__
“Love. A thing to be shouted from the rooftops, celebrated, not cultivated in secret and clipped into shape in the dark.”
__
“Love mattered in this ruined world, but so did honor. What was one without the other?”
__
“Life was like that, she guessed; it was all wrong until suddenly it was right, and you didn’t really know how to react in either instance.”
__
“They learned to breathe, and then to talk, and then, if they were lucky, to hope. Frankie taught them the healing power of words and the joy of finding quiet. Peace, at least the beginning of it, was the goal. But it was never easy.”
__
“But time—and friendship—had done exactly as promised: pain and grief had grown soft in her hands, almost pliable. She found she could form them into something kinder if she was deliberate in thought and action, if she lived a careful, cautious life, if she stayed away from anything that reminded her of the war, of loss, of death.”
