The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler

3.0

Now, this book found me because it was listed on a library check-out receipt that someone had left in a book I had checked out from the library. I had to request is just on the title alone. And since I (as someone who is secretly still 12) love YA fiction, I was pleasantly surprised when this came in to the library for me to pick up. Virginia Shreeves is the odd duck in a family of high achievers - mom is a child psychologist, dad is a successful business man and older sister and brother are academic and athletic wonderkind...but most of all, they do not struggle with their weight like Virginia does. She's stuck in high school without her closest friend who has temporarily moved away, while Virginia struggles to make sense of a blossoming romance...or is she just being used? Some have found this novel overbearing but to me it strikes the right "high school drama" chord. Ultimately it's nice to see Virginia come into her own, on her own terms.
