Southern Bastards, Vol. 1: Here Was a Man by Jason Aaron, Chris Brunner, Jason Latour

4.0

This had surprising resonance on several emotional points and was a much better book than I expected.

Southern Bastards is a bit of a riff on the life of Sheriff Buford T. Pusser of 1970s fame (also the basis for the movie Walking Tall). It is a story about small town corruption, small towns in general, kicking ass, and about the relationships between fathers and their children. It took a minute to realize it, but it does the last one very well. It made me think about what I should say to my father before he dies and what I should never say to my own children.

I'm looking forward to the next volume.
