I love the art so much in this book
Nancy's story inspired me and made me love her, after she heard a person was fired for being gay she went on a show to discuss queer rights
She came out as a lesbian at 39
Ifti nasim was harassed by his dad for wanting to become a danced he loved the arts especially poetry, ifti became a activist at age 16 and ended up getting shot in the leg for being gay, ifti didn't think he'd make it to age 40, he ended up moving to amercia and ended up living in Chicagos gay scence, he also was a weekly column for the newspaper he ended up living to 64 when he died of a heart attack "no one made me gay. I was born this way
This book really shows you the downsides queer people like myself have to deal with, like constant suicidal thoughts and attempts
Sister Rosetta tharpe- A women who retreated back into the closet from time to time and met with lovers behind closed doors she never was fully out, she found her partner Marie night during a performance Rosetta was well known for outplaying many men on guitar making her the godmother of rock n roll. She died because of a stroke in 1973
Mary was born to enslaved parents originally as a male but when she became a adult she chose to be called Mary and became a beautiful women who worked as a maid/chef often in brothels where she took care of sex workers!! She also became a sexworker herself ( we love that for her) she occasionally took men's wallets and took the money out of them to help with her day to day. She ended up meeting up with a cop she thought was a client she tried to dump the stash of stolen wallets she was later tried for grand larceny and not her line of work the sentence was 5 years and she was placed with men to this day nearly all incarcerated trans folks are placed based on the gender they were given at birth, once she was released she went back to sex work and got arrested for "crossdressing"
Dr. Magnus hirschfeld- at a very young age magnus was fascinated by human sexuality and other boys, he became a medical student in 1888, his professor brought out a man who was incarcerated in a asylum for 30 years due to being gay fully nude and traumatized magnus. In 1919 he purchased a villa to be converted into a institute for sexual science where he performed the first gender affirming surgery the first successful one was in 1922 when Dora Richter got MTF surgery. In 1933 the nazis ransacked magnus's institute setting aflame most of its archives. Magnus then fled to France where he tried to reopen it but shortly died at the age of 67 from a heart attack
Carlett brown was the first intersex person to be born, parents often elect for their intersection children to undergo invasive surgery which as the author had mentioned changing a child's body without consent is vile it should not be up to the parents. There wasn't much about her but I hope she made it to Denmark and got her surgeries
Wilmer stabbed their girlfriend for cheating on them and then died a week later at age 72 at least they lived a long live and did music with their brother
This was such a informative book and definitely recommend it to anyone who wants more knowledge on the lgbtq+ community and the history only complaint is I wish it was longer
