When I was younger and saw all the Redwall books stacked on my sister's shelf, I had no idea as to what sort of epic series Brian Jacques had conjured so skillfully as to keep my sister so interested. Years later, I finally decided to dive into the world myself.

Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Redwall is, without a doubt, a classic mystery-adventure of good vs. evil that does not shy away from darker subjects such as death and violence. Its vibrant characters, such as the strong Constance the Badger and the witty Basil the Stag Hare, all had very distinct voices and personalities that made the work delightful to read from start to finish. Matthias, the main character, is also classic hero that one can easily relate to---kind, clumsy, and shy at the very beginning of his grand adventure only to find that he is much more capable than he thinks he is. As well, the language throughout the book is beautifully descriptive and exact, coupled with irony and startling coincidences that will keep readers interested till the end.

Highly recommended for young-adult readers and fantasy-lovers of all ages.
