Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
5.0
You guys...this book. Just read it and you will see why I love Leigh Bardugo's stories.
There were two books that I knew I had to leave BEA with this year and Six of Crows was one of them. Thankfully I did and you might be surprised by this but I waited to read it until close to the release date. I did this mostly because I knew the second I finished this book I would want to get my hands on the next one…and I was right. There is no question that Leigh Bardugo is one of my favorite authors and this new series only solidifies my love for her writing. This review will be spoiler free…which means, don’t hate me when I am super vague and don’t tell you all the things.
In my head, the characters really make this story what it is - they all have their skills and a role to play. As I was reading, I kept getting an Ocean’s Eleven vibe from the story…you know, where there is this end goal of something that should be completely unachievable and somehow this group of misfits needs to pull it off. I’m not going to do a full character overview because there is such a large group and you get the story from almost all of the character’s POV’s which slowly reveals each of their stories and I loved how Bardugo set this up. With all of that said, I do want to talk about two of my favorites
Kaz is the ringleader of this group and while only 17 years old, has quite the reputation on the streets of Ketterdam. He also has a reputation among his crew – one that doesn’t allow any of them to get close to him. Kaz does everything he can to keep those around him at a distance because of what he experienced as a young boy. Yes, he has issues and is definitely willing to do whatever he needs to in order to get what he wants (REVENGE), but he is also willing to go to the mat for those he truly cares about. He is cocky and when you learn his story, you will know why. There is so much about Kaz that I loved but I can’t say anything more as I want you all to experience him page by page.
Inej…after being taken from her family and forced to work in the Menagerie, she gets an opportunity to get near Kaz and that changes her life. When Kaz buys out her debt, she becomes a member of the gang and also becomes the Wraith. She can climb and moves so silently she definitely earned the nickname. She also isn’t happy about what she has to do but she holds to her beliefs and that is where she and Kaz typically disagree. One of the things I loved most about this book were the interactions between Inez and Kaz. She isn’t afraid to call him out and tell him what she thinks even if it is to tell him something he doesn’t want to hear.
As for the rest of the group, Nina is a Heartrender who has a guilty conscience and while she doesn’t particularly like Kaz, she works with him because he promises to get Matthias out of prison. Matthias is a convict looking for revenge and again, although he doesn’t agree with anything Kaz does (as well as who Nina is) he will work with them because Kaz has something he wants. Jasper is a sharpshooter and not only does he have a secret, but he also can’t turn away from a wager. I loved the friendship that develops between Jasper and Wylan their bomb guy who happens to have run away from his family…I don’t want to say who his family is because this is another one of those things that really shows you how Kaz operates.
So…outside of the characters, this story takes you from the streets of Ketterdam to the Ice Court in search of the scientist who created a drug that affects the Grisha in ways that can be dangerous for everyone. Bardugo does a fantastic job of developing the world these characters live in and it felt different to me from the world she created in the Grisha series…which I loved. Ketterdam is gritty and dirty and the streets are dangerous which fits perfectly with this group of characters.
That’s about all I want to tell you…outside of the fact that YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!! This book has fantastic characters, an engaging story, and Bardugo had me rooting for this group of misfits the entire time. If you haven’t added this book to your to read list, get to it. If you have it there, do whatever you can to get your hands on it as soon as you possibly can. Once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Is it too soon for me to ask when I can get a copy of the next book??
