Uuuh, yeah, no.
This is a case of the writing not working for me.
From the start I could tell that this wasn't the most well written book I've ever encountered - there was infodumps, repetetive and sometimes unfitting adjectives, and just a weird focus on certain characteristics of the characters that felt uncomfortable, to name a few of the things that stood out to me.
I wasn't that bothered by it, but ultimately it made this story not work for me the same way it would have had it been executed more skillfully. The way it was it didn't hold my interest, and combined with how I found some parts off-putting (the pseudo incest? Baltsaros love for killing and this weird ~beastly urge~ inside him? The dog getting left behind and apparently forgotten by his owner?) I don't want to spend any more time on this.
