The Last Girl by Goldy Moldavsky

4.0

*This book was kindly gifted to me by Harper Collins Publisher and the Socially Distanced Book Club UK in exchange for an honest review.*

I recommend this book if you like:
• Young Adult books
• Scary movies and thrillers
• Mysterious plot lines

The Last Girl is about a girl called Rachel who experiences a traumatic event and this forces her to change her life. She moves to a new city, New York, which made for a great story setting. Starting at a new school and trying to move on from her past isn’t the easiest for Rachel but she finds something that may help her with this. The Mary Shelley Club. The club members are an odd bunch and you would never place them together normally, but their love and thirst for scary movies brought them together.

The club have challenges and a game to play, these are called Fear Tests. Most of which get way out of hand and I began to question why Rachel would even want to continue to involve herself with these people. Rachel could see that their actions were childish and seeking out revenge on their peers was starting to not sit well with her.

Although, Rachel couldn’t leave the group at this point even if she wanted to. They knew her darkest secret which she couldn’t risk being public knowledge.

There was another reason Rachel willing stayed in the group. The mystery of the masked man. Who was he? What did he want? Was he someone from her past seeking revenge on her? Was he a club member who had gone rogue?

Peers were getting hurt and this got progressively worse with each Fear Test. What lengths would the club go to finish the game?

Rachel’s relationships with the club members were interesting. I enjoyed reading about Rachel and Freddie’s blooming relationship, but I also felt sparks between Rachel and Bram.

I kind of got a ‘more than friends’ vibe between Rachel and Bram but throughout the story development I was sure he gave me the creeps. Maybe he is just a boy with a rich family and little to do. He may feel invincible and Rachel’s scary past gave him just the right idea to incorporate into the Fear Tests. Has Bram gone rogue? The masked person does seem to know when and where the next Fear Test will be, even though Bram’s Fear Test at the Ski Resort was planned very last minute. Did I mention the blood on Bram’s hand that Rachel saw?

I had hoped for Rachel to see sense and run as far away from the club before it was too late.
Bram’s best friend, Felicity’s ex, Bram’s girlfriend Lux, Rachel’s best friend Saundra… Will Rachel be next?

As I predicted, Rachel was indeed the next target but that is all that I predicted correctly. The masked person reveal was such a shock. There are so many twists and turns at the end of this book that it will have your head spinning and also kicking myself that I didn’t consider that a possibility. The whole plot becomes clear at the end.

The book does conclude and provide you with the answers you need but it also leaves the door open for future sequels.
