Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland
3.0
3.8 stars. While overall enjoyable, I feel like it needed a few more rounds of editing, and I felt like at least two of the POVs were not necessary. Ty’s could’ve been cut out completely, and I feel the plot would’ve been better if Aeri didn’t have one until the next book. Not sure Royo needed one, either; his POV would’ve made a lot more sense if Aeri didn’t have one.
Sora and Mikail were the standouts for me. Euyn, on the other hand, came off as lacking empathy. Also…sexism? Really? Gay people aren’t blinked at but we draw the line at women? The “she’s just a girl” thoughts from Euyn really sucked me out of the story, because it was just so silly.
All in all, I can’t say I absolutely loved this book, but I didn’t dislike it either, and I think I will pick up the sequel. I just hope it’s edited more thoroughly, and the writing is more mature for a fantasy series. I would also like more in-depth world-building, and some more focus on the magic system, and why Yusan seems to no longer have magic at all.
