Ali Hazelwood girlies, you were right, and I apologize. I now see the error of my ways.
I need like 5 extra chapters, please. Are you telling me that we were waiting the whole time for something to resolve that quickly? Just because of that, I have to take half a star, but WOW.
The chess setting, the banter, the romance, the family dynamics! I wasn't expecting this book to be so profficient in other areas aside for the romance.
This book had me giggling and kicking my feet in the air like no other. The pacing was masterful. It was not to autolove, but also not toooo slowburn. It had time to develop both the friendly and the romantic parts of the couple dynamic. Just how I like it.
Was it completely unrealistic in terms of how chess championships work? Oh, I'm sure. And I dont care. I dont doubt that Ali took creative liberties here and there, I think she created a compelling setting, and I was never bored when she got to technical in the chess field. It was actually one of my favorite parts. She did so good at balancing the romance and the chess. It's almost like the two chess nerds had so much in common that they ended up falling in love!
I also appreciated how Mallory´s family was in the picture the whole time. I didn't expect to cry with this book, but one scene with her mother and her sister made me tear up a little.
Now the question is. Will I read another Ali Hazelwood book?
I am not opposed to it, but I certainly need time to pick it. One of the reasons that I had not read the author before, besides the extreme hype, is that I just dont find the science field related romance stories appealing, and that's all she writes. This was the exception as fas as I know. But who knows, maybe I'll give them a chance.
